The other day, I saw a video by Tim Denning where he talked about how even great writers often have poor copywriting skills, and that really hurts their income.
It’s true! I’ve seen it myself, and I’ve even been guilty of it.
I’m talking about…
Copywriting!
…But how is this different from good old writing?
One thing: purpose.
Great writing will make your readers keep reading, but to get there, you need to make them click on that title first!
And clicking is an action they need to choose to make. Every action is triggered by an emotion, and every emotion is triggered by a feeling.
So your title’s purpose is to provoke an action.
In my marketing language, this is called selling, which in modern digital marketing language is also called ‘copywriting’.
Writing vs. Copywriting

Great writing isn’t about selling, but great titles are.
You’re selling an idea, and readers are buying it by paying you with their attention and time.
That’s the currency of writing online.
How you copywrite a title? The 3 simple hacks!
The easiest way to sell is to solve a problem!
Remember how I said people act based on feelings and emotions? They also need to trust you.
All you need are three simple elements:
- Make them feel – by stating a problem
- Make them emotional – by implying a solution
- Make them trust you – by adding a fact or a number
You can even use your subtitle to do this. Keep titles short, think about SEO, and don’t be afraid to exaggerate!
Here’s an example:
- Writing: “Productivity Strategies for Remote Work Success”
- Copywriting: “Tired of Work From Home Burnout? These 5 Hacks Changed My Life Forever”
The same goes for your call to actions. Don’t just inform, sell!
So, next time you’re creating a title, don’t just write it – copywrite it! Save your amazing writing skills for your actual writing.
