If you’re already making over $200 a month on Medium, you probably don’t need my advice. But if you’re new and still trying to hit that $200 mark, then listen up!

To make it on Medium, you need to show up daily and have a plan. No strategy equals no money and lots of frustration. So, I’m sharing my secrets to help you grow. Once you hit your goal, aim to double it each month until you’re raking it in.

Here’s the deal:

  • Write a mix of long and short articles. Aim for at least 200 timeless pieces. I know short stuff is popular now, but don’t forget about those longer ones too. It’s all about balance!
  • Focus on creating timeless articles that you can keep promoting even on those days when you’re not in the mood or too busy to write.
  • Always include a call to action at the end of each post. It should direct readers to a product you’re selling, your newsletter, or a sign-up form to receive your stories in their inbox.

Don’t stress about getting into big-name publications. It’s more important to find one that accepts a variety of topics and publishes quickly.

For your longer articles, I suggest “Illumination.” They’ve always been quick to accept and publish my work. If your long-form piece is about making money, try “Illuminations Mirror.”

Another promising publication is CREATIVETECH Friends, but they only accept Medium Friends.

To grow your audience, follow at least 50 people a day. This tip came from a successful Medium writer with a large following. Some of those folks will follow you back and become loyal readers.

Start a newsletter and join a Slack group. “Illumination” invites all its writers to their Slack group, which is a great way to connect with other Medium writers and share your stories.

Authentically engage with other writers. Supporting fellow writers is important, and becoming a Medium Friend is a great way to do that. When I upgraded, my income more than doubled, and I even got a free tote bag!

Always respond to every comment on your posts – it shows appreciation for your readers’ time. Follow those who comment too.

Publish or promote a story at least three times daily. If you’re short on time for new content, share one of your evergreen stories. Can’t think of anything to write? Share a short thought or promote an old post, and engage with other writers’ work. Aim for around 9 am, 3 pm, and 8 pm.

Shoot for 10,000 monthly views.

To get better on Medium, you MUST read as many helpful articles from other authors who have had success on Medium as possible.

Absorb their wisdom like a sponge.

Start a LinkedIn newsletter and share all your Medium articles there. It won’t be considered duplicate content if you add “Originally posted on Medium” with a link at the end.

Create a simple digital product on Gumroad. You could even offer it for free to collect email addresses for your newsletter. Later, you can make other products to sell. If you don’t have any products yet, become an affiliate for other creators on Gumroad and earn commission by promoting their stuff.

Always link to your other Medium articles within your posts. This helps readers discover more of your work.

Pin your top 5 articles to your Medium profile to showcase your best content.

Join a Medium Facebook group and share your posts using your friend link.

On Twitter, follow 20 people daily to grow your audience (I follow Dan Koe’s followers for inspiration).

On LinkedIn, connect with 20 people daily and join at least 10 groups to increase visibility.

On Instagram, follow 20 people a day, again targeting Dan Koe’s fans.

Post daily on Pinterest.

On Tumblr, follow 20 people daily and share your Medium articles with a link back to the original post.

Use Buffer’s free membership to schedule posts throughout the day and night to reach different time zones.

Include links to a few of your Medium articles in every newsletter.

What’s beyond Medium?

Join Upwork and consider getting a free or upgraded membership. Don’t forget to add a call to action at the end of each Medium post to attract potential writing clients.

To generate additional income, sell products on Gumroad, self-publish on Amazon or Audible, create a YouTube channel and monetize it, or start a paid podcast on Substack.

Avoid using AI to create articles, as Medium discourages it.

When interacting with other writers, offer constructive criticism and refrain from negativity.

And most importantly, never give up!
